Moving out checklist
This is part of our information on Renting Off Campus and Ending your tenancy and moving out.
The guidance applies to you if you are renting a house, flat or room from a private landlord.
From 1 May 2026, most renters in this kind of accommodation have an . This type of tenancy does not have an end date; if the tenancy contract shows an end date after 1 May 2026, it no longer applies. To bring an assured periodic tenancy to an end you must give to your landlord or the landlord’s agent (by email/text/letter). The notice must end on the rent due day or the day before. You can agree an earlier date or a shorter notice period, but this must be agreed in writing with the landlord. Get advice if you are unsure.
3 months before moving out
Give notice (if required)
- Check your rent due day (e.g., the 1st of each month). Your notice should end on that day or the day before.
- Give 2 months’ notice in writing unless you and the landlord agree something different in writing.
- If you’re in a joint tenancy, speak to housemates first — one person’s notice can end it for everyone.
1 – 2 weeks before moving out
Inventory and conditions
- Compare the property to the check‑in inventory and any move‑in photos.
- Identify anything damaged/broken/stained and address it early (report issues in writing; keep evidence).
- Clean the property thoroughly, including kitchen appliances and bathrooms. Don’t forget outdoor areas (garden/patio) if they’re part of the let.
Notify others of your change of address
- Bank/building society
- The University (via student self-service)
- Insurance providers
Post, TV licence, services
- Arrange (fees apply)
- and apply for a refund.
- If bills are in your name, plan closures/transfers (gas/electric/water/internet).
- Locate all the instruction manuals (cooker, oven, etc), if these were provided by the landlord.
Arrange inspection
- Arrange an inspection to be carried out by your landlord/letting agent before the moving out day. This will give them the opportunity to discuss any matters that need attention. If there are any issues, fix these before moving out so that the landlord/letting agent does not need to do the work.
Moving out day
- Final cleanliness check
- Move your possessions out if you have not done so yet

- Write down your meter readings. If bills are included give these to the landlord/letting agent. If bills are not included contact the utility companies to close your account and get the final bill.

- Gather all keys.
- Leave your forwarding address(es) with your landlord/letting agent.
- Go through the moving in inventory and take plenty of photos.
